Motor Neurone Disease Care
Comprehensive Support For Your Loved Ones
Expert Support For Motor Neurone Disease
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a life-changing condition that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As these cells become damaged, it leads to a progressive loss of motor skills, causing muscle weakness and making everyday tasks more difficult to manage. We understand that an MND diagnosis is an incredibly emotional and challenging time, not just for the individual, but for the entire family. Navigating these changes can feel overwhelming, which is why having a strong, compassionate support network is essential.
In Ireland, this is a journey shared by many. There are currently more than 470 people living with the condition and registered with the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA), with around 155 new diagnoses each year. While MND affects everyone differently, the right support can significantly enhance everyday comfort and well-being.
At Caremark Ireland, we are here to walk this path with you. Our devoted and highly trained team specialises in providing tailored, top-tier care right in the comfort of your own home. From assisting with mobility and daily tasks to offering vital emotional support, we build personalised care plans focused on your unique needs. Our goal is to alleviate stress for families while ensuring your loved one can live with dignity, respect, and independence for as long as possible.
Understanding The Types Of MND
While Motor Neurone Disease is often discussed as a single condition, there are four main types that affect the body in different ways. Because there can be a great deal of overlap between these forms, it is not always possible to be entirely specific in practice.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
This is the most common form of the disease, accounting for approximately 90% of cases. It involves both upper and lower motor neurones, leading to progressive muscle weakness and wasting in the limbs. Early signs often include tripping while walking or frequently dropping items, and it can eventually lead to respiratory failure.
Progressive Bulbar Palsy (PBP)
Affecting about a quarter of people diagnosed with MND, PBP involves both upper and lower motor neurones. The primary early symptoms usually affect the muscles of the face and throat, leading to slurred speech and difficulty swallowing.
Progressive Muscular Atrophy (PMA)
This is a rare form that affects a small proportion of individuals, making up around 5% of cases. It mainly causes damage to the lower motor neurones, resulting in gradual muscle wasting and reduced mobility. Early symptoms are often noticed as weakness or clumsiness in the hands.
Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS)
Accounting for roughly 5% of cases, PLS is a rare form involving only the upper motor neurones. It progresses more slowly than ALS and primarily causes weakness in the lower limbs, alongside muscle stiffness and a loss of voluntary motor control. Some individuals may also experience clumsiness in their hands or mild speech problems.
How Caremark Can Support You
Caring for a loved one with Motor Neurone Disease is an act of deep devotion, but it can also take a profound physical and emotional toll on family members. Primary caregivers often put their own health on hold, which can lead to exhaustion and burnout over time. At Caremark, we believe that looking after your own well-being is essential for your entire family. Whether you need a few hours during the day to run errands, overnight assistance to ensure a restful sleep, or a full week of respite care, our dedicated team can step in seamlessly so you can rest and recharge.
Taking that first step toward receiving outside support can feel overwhelming, but we strive to make the process simple and reassuring. It begins with a friendly, informal phone call to discuss your situation and answer any immediate questions. Next, we arrange a free, no-obligation consultation. This allows us to understand your specific needs, daily routines and preferences, which we use to create a fully tailored, person-centred care plan.
Once your plan is established, we carefully match your family with a compatible Care Assistant to foster a comfortable, trusting relationship from day one. Our goal is to demystify home care and provide you with total peace of mind every step of the way.

Tax Relief: Clients or their relatives paying for private home care can claim income tax relief on the cost of the service at their top rate of tax, subject to Revenue conditions. Speak to our team to learn more.
